In nowadays, one of the hottest topics is Artificial Intelligence, the news such as Google's Alphago beating the world's top Go players sparked heated discussion. So, it is predicted that in the near future, many jobs will be replaced by artificial intelligence due to the efficiency and accuracy of the machine is higher than the human, and using artificial intelligence instead of human work can also save the company's operating costs: after all, labor costs are much higher than the machine. In addition, high-tech companies provide excellent working environment and salary, that attracting a large number of students to learn computer science, even supermodel Karlie Kloss went to New York University to study computer science, and she became a role model for many girls. But, some of my friends who study computer science joked that they are wondering whether Karlie Kloss is learning computer science for serious. They said her Instagram never post the photos related to coding, and she seems to have fun every day. For almost computer science major students, they study hard and feel tired every day because they need a plenty of time to coding or debug and have no time for fun.
Living in California, where many high-tech companies gathered that has a plenty of opportunities to hear people talking about machine learning or artificial intelligence on different occasions, which gives me the illusion: if I do not understand the computer language or basic programming, I will become “illiterate” in today’s society. on the other hand, I have a lot of friends study computer science, they often encourage me to transfer to this major due to they thought that girls should be encouraged to study engineering instead of business major or liberal arts, in order to break the stereotype: girls not good at STEM. So sometimes I am also very confused, I do not know whether I should follow the crowd to study a major that I am not interested in, just for finding a good salary job after I graduate; or insist on my interested area but it may hard to find a job in the future. Therefore, I have always admired those who had a clear goal at the beginning, they can devote their passions to pursue their goals and not be disturbed.
Female empowerment through professional achievement doesn't always mean following what men in computer science are doing to make tons of money. What's the point of eventually hoarding a bunch of money when you can't spend it on what you want: a major you're not interested in? Ideally, any woman will eventually be able to study whatever they want, and succeed as any of their male counterparts would.
ReplyDeletefemale empowerment is predicated on following what men in computerscience are doing to make LOADS of money...
ReplyDeleteJust kidding. but i am curious now, what is the major you are currently passionate about. Also, if you dont make alot of money here with whatever profession turns out to be you can always tavel to a poorer country and live rich there. and underestimates plan B
I feel like an empowered woman would just do what she loves, instead of trying to prove a point to a man. What are you really interested in? But, I also understand where you're coming from- I think this is such a complicated topic that it's hard to take a particular stance on it.

ReplyDeleteIt is true that those in computer science make a lot of money, but that is not a good reason to get into it. I say if you're curious try learning a little more to see if you'd actually enjoy it. USC offers students access to the website lynda.com which has professional online lessons in various computer science topics. The truth is you don't need a computer science degree for every job in technology and a good chunk of people are self-taught. Maybe explore and try a few lessons, you'll never know if you don't try. Who knows maybe you'll like it!
ReplyDeleteNot having your path set early on doesn't necessarily mean you can't be passionate about it when you figure it out. I find that when you find your path later on, you fight for it more vigorously then when you thought you had a path. When I realized what I wanted to do with my life, I hustled and grinded until I got everything right.
