Jacqueline Novogratz's TED talk

There is a Chinese proverb: You give a poor man a fish and you feed him for a day; You teach him to fish and you give him an occupation that will feed him for a lifetime. Novogratz's Acumen Fund is doing such a thing which making philanthropy more effective. One the other hand, Novogratz mentioned at the beginning of the speech: many people want to make life meaningful, but they have various concerns in fact such as fear of their life without guaranteed and will be marginalization etc. in other words, most of the people not willing to make sacrifices to get what they want.

One of the most touching stories from this speech is a group of young men who come from the largest slum in the world, Kibera established a book club in order to explore the beautiful side of Kibera, most of the members come from the slum. They read the book written by TED talker and inspired each other. During this speech, Jacqueline Novogratz post a picture of these young men and some of the book club’s member, and I was touching by their bright smile since it looks like they’ve never encounter difficulties and frustrations in life. To be honest, if I was living in that terrible circumstance I would not have a courage like them: it may hard for me to keep an optimistic attitude to face such things like poverty and AIDS. I have to endure my life with disease, hunger, and a living environment without secure, also the fear will control my life. Therefore, I may not consider going to inspire others since I am the one from the slum. Meanwhile, I have great admiration for these young men because they did it and try to help more people in need.

It is a little difficult to me to live an immersion life at this stage, due to I still need time to explore what is a real passion in my life and where is my potential. I love what Robert Kennedy once said: “few of us have the greatness to bend history itself, but each of us can work to change a small portion of events.” I hope that I would be a person who good for society and other people finally.
